Hello there!
I just moved from my previous instance to toot.community, so I guess it's time for an #introduction post :)
I'm a 30yo developer who talks mostly about #technology, #OpenSource and #SelfHosting, sometimes about #photography and #environment, and rarely about #FrenchPolitics.
I hope to make a few new connections here!
Bonjour ici !
It's official: #Microsoft deprecated #WindowsMixedReality and will remove it in a future #Windows update...
What a shame, it was an excellent alternative to #MetaQuest and #ValveIndex that went from the low-end to the high-end while being compatible with #SteamVR.
Well, let's start counting days before my HP WMR becomes a paperweight :/ #VR #WMR

Oh, what a great #Christmas gift: #FreshRSS got a release today! 🥰 #FOSS #OpenSource #SelfHosting

#HP's CEO made the bullshit claim that they block third-party #InkCartridges from their #printers in order to fight viruses.
Many #security experts agree that it's a highly unlikely attack vector, which confirms that it's a greedy move in order to protect their IP and subscription model

Today I played my first #FPS (#PortalRevolution) on my #SteamDeck and I was chocked how good the #trackpad's mouse emulation is.
Using the stick to move the camera was awful, as the dead zones are too big for precise movements while the default sensitivity is too low for quick movements.
The trackpad on the other hand is surprisingly good: I could do quick pans by flicking the virtual trackball and precise movements as well!
Reminds me of a Moto 360 Gen 2 update that made the battery life drop from ~12 hours to less than a work day 🙄 #FitBit #WearOS #smartwatch

@halide @macrumors it looks like a Samsung Galaxy 🙃
It definitely weird to see Apple go away from the camera square which has been a defining design trait for the last few generations of iPhones

I've been trying #NextJS14 for the past week, it has blown my mind!
I don't remember ever being able to write a dynamic website this quickly.
It has server-side rendering and caching by default and out-of-box, seamless lazy-loading and data-streaming, server and client components interleaving, easy to write REST API...

In response to https://mastodon.social/users/sdw/statuses/112046502033504236.
@sdw This is stupid, EU citizens still are EU citizens even outside the EU! It's the same as following GDPR only if a website visitor's IP is from a EU country 🙄
Hello #WebDev and #javascript people!
I was wondering, what's the consensus on #monorepo tooling in 2024?
I would greatly appreciate if you have some comparison between package managers and build systems you could link to 😁
Thanks!
In response to https://mastodon.social/users/MichaelAltfield/statuses/112038283570306227.
@MichaelAltfield The tricky part is, even though photos are deleted from your instance, there is no mechanism to delete them from federated instances (each instance has a local copy of pictures posted to other instances)
In response to https://mamot.fr/users/nhoizey/statuses/112213530749494220.
@nhoizey isn't setting an `srcset` enough to alleviate this issue?
In response to https://front-end.social/users/chriskirknielsen/statuses/112214456457051936.
@chriskirknielsen I see people on my timeline building their websites with 11ty and I'm here re-building mine with Next.js 😅
In response to https://front-end.social/users/chriskirknielsen/statuses/112215004519219733.
@chriskirknielsen It's definitely overkill, but I wanted to play with React Server Components! As for client-side JS, you still have to provide JS at least for navigation (not sure you can opt-out, it still works with JS disabled), but my aim is to ship as little as possible to the client.
In response to https://mamot.fr/users/nhoizey/statuses/112215055723935348.
@nhoizey yes, I figured you would have to optimize the sizes

In response to https://mastodon.social/users/HTeuMeuLeu/statuses/112234597906242959.
@HTeuMeuLeu Pourquoi ça ne m'étonne pas ?
I don't know how I missed it, but I gotta love grid-template-areas for building #CSS Grids. Until last week I was positioning elements on the grid like a caveman, using grid-row and grid-columns 🤦♂️
TIL that #FirefoxForAndroid does not support #HTMLDragAndDrop 😢

Well, I'm very disappointed by the fact that #Apple still ties #Safari updates with their OSes:
Last week I created nice, styled checkboxes using the `:has()` pseudo-element, thinking it was already well-supported.
That was until today, when I realized that only #iOS 15.4+ supports it and that a non-negligible amount of my employer's clients use versions lower than that… 😮💨
So I had to nix my elegant solution and add divs that are only used for applying style to their children #CSS #WebDev
Sauf qu'aujourd'hui j'ai eu droit à :
In response to a previous post.
A bunch of Asian tourist just boarded my train and suddenly a ton of pocket Wi-Fi hotspots appeared 😅

In response to a previous post.
In response to https://oisaur.com/users/vincent/statuses/112451863597063833.
@csscade Hello, just to let you know that your RSS feed has an issue: it seems that the articles' IDs are not static, resulting in duplicate articles in some RSS readers

The making of the movie is fascinating:
It's a technical marvel as it used the first radio-controlled cameras and is one of the first movies to mount cameras onto racing cars.
It's a political tour de force as they were able to film during grand prix weekends and convince Ferrari to be onboard.
And finally it's incredible that the main actors actually drove their cars (and were trained by Carol Shelby!), and that they convinced actual F1 drivers to drive the camera car as well as opponents'.

But it's even more frustrating when it's from someone that is well-regarded in their community, like how the fuck are people supposed to keep up other than following them on (that hellscape formerly known as) Twitter?
And obviously, that blog uses Tailwind rather than semantic HTML or BEM class names, making it difficult to parse the fucking thing with FreshRSS.

@chriskirknielsen The favicons do help, I think I'll add them to my current version. The OPML is a nice touch, I did not think of adding it even though I'm parsing one to create my list! I'll add that as well, though I'll have to manipulate it to remove my paid feeds.

@chriskirknielsen I did it by iterating the feeds when parsing the OPML and replaced the private feed URL by the public one. I also stripped the RSS feed URL for Kill the Newsletter feeds

Oh, Vercel just released Next.js 15 and announced that Turbopack is now stable.

Personally, after I added a feed, I'll scan the titles, pick the articles I find interesting and mark every other articles as read. But when the feed has like 20+ articles I feel overwhelmed and mark the entire feed as read.

I wonder why units (such as gram, kilometers, miles) aren't locale-dependant like temperatures and hour formats. I spent the last week in London and I was slightly annoyed that Citymapper and Google Maps would express distances in yards and miles (which are meaningless to me) with no option to switch to the metric system for the former (it's hidden in the settings for Maps). #i18n #locale

@pimterry We are using MUI's Pigment CSS which has styled compiled at build time and it works relatively well with React Server Components. It has a few edge cases and the documentation is a bit lacking.
There is also Next Yak which has an API closer to styled-components and uses the exact same solution as Pigment CSS.

I was perfectly happy using #Deezer for the past two weeks until I noticed that you cannot add titles or albums to the queue on Android!
How can such a basic feature be missing? And it's not like the feature has to be implemented from scratch: it is available on the desktop, which is why it took me so long to notice its absence on my phone.
This is almost a deal-breaker to me, like what the hell? 😤
In response to a previous post.
Correction: the add to queue feature is there, but somehow it disappears when using the "Shuffle my music" feature. And I just checked on desktop, adding to queue is still there in that case. WTF.
I finally updated my TrueNAS SCALE install to 24.10 and gave a try to the new RAIDZ expansion feature –which I was waiting for a long time. Granted, it took about 72 hours to go from 4 to 5 drives, but it was pretty easy and painless.
Now, I hope to test out the native docker compose feature in the next few weeks, and find out if it matches my needs.
I think I've found the best place to hide a tracker on my Brompton: in its front carrier block!
It does require a Pebblebee Tag, as AirTag and Chipolo One are too big to fit. Just make sure to leave a space on top for the locking mechanism to fit.
Edit: I was told that AirTags fit as well, so I guess Motorola Moto Tag might fit too, as I believe they are roughly the size of AirTags.
In response to https://ravenation.club/users/bleepbloop/statuses/113877842902843889.
@bleepbloop This tracker works with Apple's and Google's Find My Device networks.
How it works is that the tracker broadcasts a signal and every compatible phone that picks it up reports the location at which it heard the tracker. The report is encrypted so that only the tracker's owner can know its location.
In response to https://lemmy.world/comment/14641356.
@Blue_Morpho I don't think it would interfere with the signal as the carrier block is mostly made of plastic. I haven't tried the range yet, but I'm not too worried.

@arstechnica I don't know, even though Valve are pushing Steam OS they still treat all their platforms equally, and I don't think asking gamers to replace their OS or buy a new PC in order to play Half-Life 3 is a good marketing strategy. Half-Life Alyx is a great example: as great a game it is, few people actually bought VR headsets to play it.

Last week, some niche streaming platform decided to drop support for #Firefox, which was odd to me as it still works fine once I set my User Agent to Chrome.
Turns out, they were planning a new "Premium" subscription with HDR, which Firefox does not support yet.
I get that they probably want to avoid users complaining that the feature they paid for does not work, but could they not just have put a banner that reads "HDR not supported on your browser" instead?

Anyone got an alternative to Hacker News Digest with less AI Kool-aid? It's getting out of hands, half of the top articles has some LLM bullshit.
This line in Lemmy's changelog made me chuckle:
Also remove private messages when banning user with "remove content" (goodbye Nicole)
Have the #SplitFiction devs done playtests? Some levels are ridiculously difficult, how could they have left them in this state until release?
Stumbled upon this post from myself 10 years ago, it made me chuckle:
"Three years after starting to learn Java, I only now realize that there is no operator overloading. Three years, FFS"
I get why young Axel would have liked this feature back then, but nowadays I don't do much OOP anymore and I don't miss operator overloading.
Great... the clean water pipe of my #Dreame mopping robot somehow disconnected, leaking water everywhere and ruining my hard wood flooring in the process.
And after a painful disassembly and reassembly, now it does even pump water from its tank...
#Chromium does not seem to "talk" to my screen reader on #Linux, is it expected behavior (they say Orca "may work" here https://www.chromium.org/user-experience/assistive-technology-support/), misconfiguration or a bug?
#a11y #ScreenReader #WebDev #Chromium
In response to a previous post.
Weird, it does not work with Epiphany either (which is part of GNOME, it should work with Orca!). Does the issue lie with Flatpak's sandboxing? Which, again, is weird as Firefox is also a Flatpak and it works!
In response to a previous post.
Well, turns out it was a lack of Flatpak permission: adding "org.a11y.Bus" to Session Bus using Flatseal fixed everything!

The wl-clipboard package is so underrated. I love using it to manipulate strings using terminal utilities.
Things like removing a certain character:
wl-paste | tr -d "\n" | wl-copy

What does this #Javascript code output?
const array = ['1', '2', '3', '4'];
console.log(array.map(parseInt));
If you guessed "[1, NaN, NaN, NaN]", congrats!
TIL that `array.map(parseInt)` is the same as `array.map((value, index) => parseInt(value, index))` where `index` acts as `parseInt`'s `radix`! And in this case, it leads to mapping to NaN after the first item.

From now on, I'll point to this article whenever someone asks me why I don't code with AI
I became a software engineer because writing code is fun. Thinking through hard problems, designing elegant solutions, seeing the things you’ve built working for the first time… these moments are all deeply satisfying, so why in the world would I ever surrender them to AI?
Here is my early Christmas gift to everyone who left Google Calendar behind: a Firefox add-on that transforms links to create new Google Calendar events into ICS files you can import in your favorite calendar application
https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/google-calendar-links-to-ics/
@lexinova Well, nowadays in Google Calendar you can only export your entire calendar as an ICS, not single events. This add-on tackles "Add to Google Calendar" links, which pre-fill the new event UI in Calendar (and this UI is behind an auth-wall)
Looking at everything I have left to do today and how little I wrote, I guess my 2025 retrospective will be published in 2026.
Ah yes, the GenAI NYE decoration
What the hell? I just found out a website where every dimension in CSS is expressed... relative to the viewport width???
This mean that everything is comically big on desktop (like the navigation takes a third of the screen), that you cannot zoom out and that the navigation is tiny on mobile.
Oh, Firefox 147 (released tomorrow) is a big one for developers:
- Finally enables CSS anchor positioning (was behind a flag)
- Iterator.concat()
- Navigation API
- View transition types
- WebGPU on macOS
- ECMAScript module scripts for service workers

Since I had filters for common smooth-scrolling, I split them into their own list and added a few rules that disables the most common scroll fade libraries:
Quoted post is unavailable
@db Yes, and it won't be able to block implementations that are bundled with the rest (like react-fade). But if they use classes or data-attributes to determine which blocks to fade, they can be removed (in uBlock Origin at least)
In response to https://mstdn.fr/users/axx/statuses/115973954737382881.
@axx Well, it depends on how demanding the games you play are. Pre-PS5 games generally run fine, some with graphics downgrades. Overall I am very happy with my Deck, the battery life is quite decent and the OLED screen is simply gorgeous (I don't believe its competitors have as good looking screens)
You may know by now, but I have been applying for jobs for a couple of months, and when I receive a rejection (if I ever do), it is usually an automated email.
But when it is not, I thank the sender for putting the effort to actually craft and send an answer to my application.
I just discovered #Forgejo's ability to create new repositories on push, this is so cool! And they are private by default ❤️

"It’s worth noting that a C compiler is a near-ideal task for semi-autonomous AI model coding: The specification is decades old and well-defined, comprehensive test suites already exist, and there’s a known-good reference compiler to check against. Most real-world software projects have none of these advantages. The hard part of most development isn’t writing code that passes tests; it’s figuring out what the tests should be in the first place."
The last sentence matters A LOT.

@reed My experience in the past few month has been mostly negative:
- On one occasion the company gave no feedback on it after they declined to pursue the process based on the exercise.
- For another, I had 2 hours to build a complete full-stack app, complete with good UX. Too little time IMO, unless you use LLMs and component libraries.
- Yet another gave me a skeleton of their entire app, gave me ~6-9 hours to add features. I withdrew my candidacy because the stack felt needlessly complex and…
In response to a previous post.
@reed … I could not be bothered to spend the time.
- Not to forget a live coding exercise to code tic-tac-toe and sudoku solvers that felt extremely distant from my day-to-day tasks.
I believe the best "exercise" I had so far, was simply an open conversation on how I would implement multiple features.
It is really refreshing to see real humans perform at a concert, especially as I have spent the past week reading, writing and hearing about LLMs. I should see performing arts more often.
Yet another reason to leave #Vercel: your code is opted in by default to train their own LLM. FFS, I really need to move off their enslopified platform.

@firefoxwebdevs Something I noticed in the example is that if the browser does not support CloseWatcher, the "Close" button does not work.
I get that the button's event listener calls watcher.close() for demonstration purposes, but I feel that in production it would be more appropriate to call closeSidebar() instead, maybe the accompanying text should reflect that?

@firefoxwebdevs Also of note: on Firefox for Android Beta 149.0b10, the "Close" button works, but it does not intercept the back gesture, returning to the previous page instead. Chrome behaves as expected.

The amount of hand-holding and guidance you have to provide to LLMs in order to keep them from spewing inaccessible HTML is quite ridiculous. Gotta admit though that setting up a CI to catch these issues is a good idea, whether you use LLM or not.

I bought a Brooks Wingman adapter but it did not work and I returned it.

It runs fine (with a couple of hiccups) after a few tweaks, and I even get to play with a higher resolution!
Welp, that's it, a bot finally discovered my Forgejo instance and is browsing entire commit histories... Well, for now it's wasting time going through an old fork of Lemmy, but I should set up something.

Thankfully, I discovered that the day after @forgejo's v15 release, which only sets the "session" cookie for authenticated users, so I am able to configure Caddy so it rate-limits unauthenticated visits \o/

I need to tweak my rate-limiting config as it is not effective against those scrapers. What did though, was blocking requests with the header "Accept-Language: zh-CN"
Gotta go play Badminton, I'm already late
In response to a previous post.
Since the scapers were spreading their request over multiple IPs (making it more difficult to enforce rate limits) I ended up adding a geoblocking module to Caddy and blocked Alibaba's ASN. This solution has the nice side effect of allowing me to easily block other cloud providers in the future.
Got curious to see if Motorstorm Pacific Rift would run well on a Steam Deck using RPCS3.
It is playable, but not perfectly smooth: framerate oscillates around 20 FPS with drops to 15 and rare flashes at 30 FPS. There are no visual glitches to report and it looks sharp once dynamic resolution scaling is turned off.
Nice experiment, but I think the experience would be far better on my desktop.

Two years after I rewrote my website with #NextJS, the honeymoon is over. As I longed for something simpler to handle my #blog, I gave a try to #Astro, and I wrote about my experience and the challenges I faced.

@chriskirknielsen You did suggest 11ty, as well as Astro especially for its MDX support.
The bubble also has a variant for questions asked by the audience: https://axel.leroy.sh/blog/website-rewrite-nextjs#new-writing-blocks

@zemoko Merci, bon à savoir !

Someone royally messed @astro's RSS feed: all links are broken (they all link to "feat/blog/{slug}"), which means my aggregator thinks all entries are new, since the URL is different!

Apparently someone is already on it https://github.com/withastro/astro.build/pull/2524
Just found out that #Renovate's "lockfile maintenance" does not enforce its own "minimumReleaseAge"... You have to set it in you package manager so it does not try to pull recent dependencies -_-
Very few people will get this joke, but:
The only Kimi I want is Antonelli. (also works with Raikonnen)
I saw Steven Spielberg's A.I Artificial Intelligence a couple of months ago and I was surprised by how relevant it still is, especially in the current LLM craze:
Je découvre avec tristesse qu'on ne peut pas réserver w.tf car l'extension n'autorise pas les noms de domaines de moins de 3 caractères 😢

With toot.community closing on October, should I move to another instance or set up my own?
In response to a previous post.
I'm seriously considering spinning up a GoToSocial instance, but I don't know if I should go through the pain of a split-domain deployment to get a nice username like @axel@axeleroy.com or @axel@leroy.sh (with GoToSocial running on a subdomain)

I finally spent the afternoon to migrate my Docker setup from "Docker in a VM" to "Docker in TrueNAS". Apart from a single container that fails to start and a false start copying data from the VM, it has been pretty eventless, thanks to some exploratory work yesterday.
